Position Overview
The Executive Director of Hospice is responsible for the overall administration, strategic planning, and operational oversight of the hospice program. This role ensures compliance with all applicable Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations, while fostering a culture of compassionate, patient- and family-centered care. The Executive Director is accountable for the performance of all departments, staff development, financial stewardship, and the delivery of high-quality end-of-life services.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement short- and long-term strategic plans to guide the growth and direction of the hospice program.
- Monitor industry trends and regulatory changes to ensure ongoing compliance and innovation.
- Operational Oversight
- Direct and coordinate all hospice operations, ensuring effective delivery of services across interdisciplinary teams.
- Ensure compliance with 42 CFR Part 418 (Medicare Hospice Conditions of Participation) and ISDH hospice licensure requirements.
- Financial Management
- Oversee budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting.
- Ensure fiscal responsibility and sustainability through effective resource allocation and cost control.
- Staffing and Human Resources
- Recruit, hire, and retain qualified staff in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Ensure timely orientation, competency evaluations, and ongoing education for all staff and volunteers.
- Promote a culture of accountability, empathy, and professional growth.
- Clinical and Quality Oversight
- Ensure coordinated implementation of individualized plans of care.
- Oversee the quality assessment and performance improvement (QAPI) program.
- Monitor patient outcomes, satisfaction, and compliance with hospice eligibility criteria.
- Community and Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as the primary liaison with the Governing Body, Executive Leadership, referral sources, and community partners.
- Represent the hospice program to the public, government agencies, and healthcare organizations.
- Support marketing and outreach efforts to grow census and community awareness.
- Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of CMS, ISDH, OSHA, HIPAA, and other applicable regulations.
- Ensure readiness for state and federal surveys and audits.
- Oversee emergency preparedness, infection control, and safety protocols.
- Technology and Data Management
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation in Home Care HomeBase (HCHB)
- Utilize data analytics to inform decision-making and improve care delivery.

Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in the State of Indiana (required).Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field (Master's preferred).Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory or administrative experience in hospice or a related healthcare setting.Knowledge of CMS Hospice CoPs, ISDH hospice regulations, and Medicare billing and documentation standards.Physical RequirementsProlonged periods of sitting and computer use.Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.Regular use of hands, hearing, and speech for communication and computer tasks.Workplace SafetyRisk of ergonomic strain and eye fatigue due to computer use.Must adhere to infection control and safety protocols.Disclaimer
