The University Writing Program at Notre Dame invites applications for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor. The University of Notre Dame is a Catholic community of higher learning, dedicated to the pursuit and sharing of truth for its own sake, where, through free inquiry and open discussion, the various lines of Catholic thought may intersect with all the forms of knowledge found in the arts, sciences, professions, and every other area of human scholarship and creativity. We are a dynamic writing program committed to teaching students an agentive and ethical approach to the writing process. We seek to cultivate in our students the skills, ethical discernment, and confidence to advocate on behalf of themselves and others, in service of the common good.

This is a full-time, renewable, non-tenure track position with opportunities for professional advancement. The faculty member will teach the equivalent of three courses each Fall and Spring semester, including both first-year Writing and Rhetoric and individualized, supplemental Writing Tutorial courses. Tutorial teaching involves regular individual instruction sessions with each student on their writing assignments across the curriculum, as well as the facilitation of writing studios where students gather to practice writing process strategies. Our Writing and Rhetoric courses are capped at 16 students, and our Writing Tutorial courses are capped at eight students. Tutorial courses involve a high degree of contact with students. The tutorial faculty build each semester’s teaching schedule around their mutual availability with students, and it is common for instructors to be on campus at least four days a week, including some evenings. In addition to teaching responsibilities, 25 percent of the job entails working as a mentor to graduate student instructors, serving on committees, and contributing to the intellectual life of the program and the university in ways that align with the instructor’s interests and expertise.

We seek applicants with strong records of teaching a wide range of student populations and a commitment to collaborative, team-based program development. We especially welcome applicants whose expertise aligns with our program’s ongoing efforts in the following areas : studio pedagogy, writing process instruction, inclusive pedagogy, writing for social justice, and student success initiatives.

Requirements :   Competitive applicants will have a relevant advanced degree and at least three years experience teaching, tutoring, or supporting student writers from a wide array of backgrounds and writing orientations. A PhD in rhetoric and composition, writing studies, or a closely related field is preferred, but not required.
