About Gamaliel
The Gamaliel Network is a multi-racial and multi-faith network working together to build political power and transform systems. Founded in 1968 in Chicago, we ground our work in leadership development, deep relational organizing, and strategic campaigns for justice.
Our methodology centers on training people—especially those from historically marginalized communities—to develop leaders, teach the mechanics of power, and to build multiracial, multifaith organizing capacity. We believe that the power to transform communities and reshape public systems lies in the ability of ordinary people to organize, act collectively, and hold decision-makers accountable.
Our network spans more than 40 local and state-based affiliates across the U.S., reaching across urban, suburban, and rural communities. Our training programs are widely recognized as among the best in the country. We train over 1,000 people annually.
We are not a single-issue organization—we are a leadership development network. We build campaigns around the values of justice and dignity, and we train leaders to take action where those values are violated : in immigration, housing, voting rights, criminal justice, education, and climate. Our model isn’t transactional—it’s transformational. We believe that organizing is a craft, and we are deeply committed to developing the next generation of powerful, faith-rooted leaders.
Our affiliates operate in places such as Milwaukee, Detroit, Chattanooga, Saint Louis, and rural Iowa. Some are based in congregations, others in broader coalitions. We work in red states and blue, across race, class, religion, and political differences. Our strength lies in our ability to hold a broad and diverse coalition together with courage and vision.
Our accomplishments include : the Transportation Equity (TEN) Campaign (led to $6.2 million in job training and 30% local hire commitments on major infrastructure projects), Ban the Box (Gamaliel affiliates helped push the Obama administration to ban the box about criminal history on federal job applications), and the Justice Reinvestment Campaign (Led by EXPO and Gamaliel Wisconsin, this campaign secured support for state and local legislation redirecting funds from incarceration to community-based services).
Today, Gamaliel stands at a powerful moment of transition. Under the leadership of our outgoing Executive Director, Ana Garcia-Ashley—the first woman of color to lead a national organizing network—we have grown in our commitment to racial and gender equity, to multifaith collaboration, and to organizing that centers the people most impacted by injustice. Now, we are looking for a new Executive Director to lead us into our next chapter.
