OVERVIEW
The University of St. Thomas (St. Thomas) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Education. St. Thomas seeks a leader with proven strategic leadership skills, a passion for Catholic intellectual tradition and the field of education, a strong commitment to shared governance, and the ability to build diverse and meaningful collaborations as the institution continually strives for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
The School of Education (School) at St. Thomas was founded as a stand-alone unit in 1921. The first graduate program St. Thomas ever established was in education, in 1950 (the second, in business, began in 1974). Though St. Thomas did not become coeducational at the undergraduate level until 1977, women were obtaining degrees in education many years before that : both women and men were admitted into the Master of Education program from its inception in 1950.
Restructuring at St. Thomas led to a decade (2008-2018) when education programs were part of either the College of Applied Professional Studies or the College of Education, Leadership, and Counseling. In 2018, the School of Education was returned to its historic status as a stand-alone unit. The School has three departments : Teacher Education, Special Education, and Educational Leadership.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced and collaborative visionary leader who can build upon the strong foundation of the School of Education. Candidates should provide vision for how to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by the changing landscape of educator professional preparation and higher education more broadly. Ideally, the next Dean of the School of Education will possess the qualifications required for an appointment at the rank of Professor within one of the academic departments in the School. Nontraditional professional experience will be reviewed and considered coupled with credible research and practical experience.
QUALIFICATIONS
The Search Committee will begin reviewing candidates immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For priority consideration, please apply before January 15, 2024.
