General Definition of Work
Performs skilled trades work operating medium to heavy equipment including loader, backhoe, sweeper and related equipment, performing minor equipment maintenance and service, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Streets Superintendent. Oversight over Street Laborer I and Street Laborer II may be required. Work hours for this position are 7 : 30 a.m. to 4 : 30 p.m. Monday through Friday with a 1 hour for lunch. May be required to work odd hours and weekends, as needed.

Essential Functions
Performs preventative maintenance and mechanical repair of equipment, vehicles, and tools.
Operates various equipment including street sweeper, backhoe, loader, bobcat, mower, dump truck, snow plow, etc.
Maintains and operates hand tools.
Installs culvert pipes, storm pipes, inlets.
Performs road maintenance by patching and repairing holes, cracks, etc.
Cleans and maintains equipment.
If on-call position may require the closing / locking of WPWD campus facilities.
Removes signs from right-of-way; removes and disposes of dead animals.
Required to perform snow and ice removal practices as needed.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the practices and techniques of operating and servicing motorized vehicles and equipment; general knowledge of the traffic law and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper equipment operation; some knowledge of geography and soil characteristics; skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks and construction equipment; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to learn geography of City; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read sketches and plans; mechanical aptitude; welding and fabrication; ability to make repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and considerable experience working with heavy equipment, utilities service and installation, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
