Job Description

The University of Nevada Reno is seeking a Chemist 3 for the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory. This position is responsible for processing and analyzing non-patient samples in compliance with the Clean Water Act (CWA) Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) EPA / FDA RadioChem initiatives wastewater analysis and other methods as assigned by the department supervisor. The successful candidate will compare analytical results with reference standards draw logical conclusions and systematically organize information test results data and instrument performance. The Chemist 3 will prepare reports in a legally defensible manner and ensure the reliability of laboratory instruments making necessary adjustments as needed.

The Chemist 3 will analyze methods and procedures to determine the best analytical approach perform multiple procedures simultaneously using various equipment and maintain the knowledge skills and abilities required for the role. This position will also communicate with clients and public health partners to provide clarity on test methods results and necessary response actions. Additionally the Chemist 3 must comply with regulatory Quality Assurance requirements in a timely and efficient manner.

Required Qualifications

This position requires Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry or closely related field and two (2) years of professional experience as a chemist in a laboratory setting; OR

One (1) year of experience as a Chemist II in Nevada State service; OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above

P ursuant to NRS 284.4066 this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

Schedule

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8 : 00 am to 5 : 00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.

Compensation Grade

Grade 34

In classified service salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment the candidates qualifications internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
