You will be working with Dr. Tom Buttgenbach, one of the most successful clean energy technology innovators and entrepreneur who has been a driving force in making solar-based energy solutions the cheapest and most reliable energy option. Tom founded and led Avantus (formerly known as “8minute Solar Energy”), to become one of the largest and most profitable solar and energy storage companies in the United States and the largest in California, including delivering over 17% of Los Angeles’ power. When Tom sold his interest in Avantus’ development business to KKR in mid‑2024, it had delivered over $1 billion in profit and secured over $10 billion in power purchase agreements and project financings with a pipeline of over 30 GW of solar and 90 GWh of energy storage, capable of powering the homes of more than 20 million Americans day and night. The Director, Power Marketing will be responsible for originating, structuring, and managing power transactions that monetize renewable generation and battery flexibility across RTO / ISO markets. Job Responsibilities

Commercial Strategy & Portfolio Optimization

Develop and execute trading, hedging, and dispatch strategies to maximize revenue from solar and BESS assets in day‑ahead, real‑time, ancillary service, and capacity markets.

Optimize BESS use cases including energy arbitrage, frequency regulation, spinning reserves, and peak‑load management.

Evaluate merchant opportunities and develop Go‑To‑Market strategies for contracted and uncontracted assets.

Origination & Deal Structuring

Originate and negotiate PPAs, tolling agreements, hedge products, VPPAs, renewable energy certificates (RECs), and resource adequacy contracts.

Collaborate with utilities, offtakers, traders, and financial counterparties to secure long‑term revenue contracts.

Structure short‑and long‑term transactions that align with risk management goals and market conditions.

Market Analytics & Forecasting

Monitor energy market fundamentals, congestion dynamics, price curves, nodal behavior, and regulatory changes across RTO / ISO markets (e.g., CAISO, ERCOT, PJM, SPP).

Analyze forward curves, LMP forecasts, basis spreads, and storage value‑stacks to support trading decisions.

Produce internal reporting on market conditions, revenue performance, and portfolio risk.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

Work with Development, Finance, etc. to inform project siting, contracting strategies, and financial models.

Support financing activities by providing revenue assumptions, merchant risk input, and offtake strategy for greenfield and operational assets.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Business, Energy, or related field.

4+ years of experience in power marketing, energy trading, origination, or wholesale market analytics.

Experience working within or alongside RTO / ISO markets.

Strong understanding of wholesale power markets, nodal pricing, battery dispatch economics, and renewable contract structures.

Proven track record of executing or supporting power transactions.

Preferred Qualifications

Direct experience with utility‑scale solar and / or BESS portfolios.

Existing relationships with utilities, traders, and corporate offtakers.

Understanding of congestion management, hedging instruments, and merchant risk.

Proficiency in power market tools.

MBA or advanced quantitative or energy‑related degree.
