- Inspects the bridges and other structures, determines repair and maintenance work required and repair estimates for work.
- Directs and provides necessary instruction to subordinate supervisors to accomplish required work.
- Supervises specialized crews for such operations as bridge repairs, building repairs, bridge painting, and toll treadle repairs.
- Determines material, equipment, and supplies needed and prepares necessary documentation to request or obtain such.
- Ensures that equipment is maintained and operated properly and in a good state of repair.
- Prepares budget estimates of equipment and personnel needs, prepares reports of operations, and maintains related records.
- Manages designated team members to include directing work assignments, coaching and development, managing performance, and conducting employee performance evaluations.
- Participates in interviewing, hiring and training new employees.
- Additional duties may be assigned as business needs require.

This position exercises considerable independence in work assignments and also works as part of a team, including providing input and problem solving with others to complete tasks. Participates in short and long-term planning. The position delegates to others, provides coaching and training in a formal / informal manner, and is responsible for providing performance feedback and input into all employee status decisions. Negotiation and persuasion is used with internal / external customers and / or vendors. Decision making is typically done independently in regard to decisions affecting the individual and department work tasks, including purchasing decisions up to $500. Successful completion of job tasks impacts appropriate utilization of equipment and labor, operating costs, internal system, customer satisfaction, and external company image / liability.
