Surgery - (Full-time, Day Shift) -

The Charge Nurse is responsible for the continued support, evaluation, and remediation of assigned staff. Functions in a leadership role and contributes to the efficiency of the organization by demonstrating fiscal responsibility during each shift. Assures that care, equipment, and services provided are appropriate for the ages and needs of the populations served. Consistently evaluates patient and family progress toward desired plan of care outcomes and goals. Contributes to regulatory readiness of the staff and unit through chart reviews and quality and performance improvement data monitoring and collection. Participates in the development and implementation of performance improvement measures pertinent to the unit. Adheres to excellence in customer service and hold staff accountable at the same level. Provides for prompt service recovery as needed. Understands, observes, and employs daily the following nursing statutes : California Nurse Practice Act, The American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses, the ANA Bill of Rights for Registered Nurses and the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing. Functions in the capacity of unit Registered Nurse (RN) as needed. Organizes nursing care for assigned groups of patients within a nursing unit. Manages and supervises all clinical activities that occur within the nursing unit. Performs other duties as needed.
Associate's Degree in Nursing required. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred. Recent, appropriate nursing practice within the past two years. Minimum one year of directly related Charge Nurse experience in area of specialty or an appropriate equivalent required, two years preferred. Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association required.
Demonstrate an understanding of normal growth and development of the pediatric, adolescent and adult population and care of these patients as appropriate to unit assigned, as well as the elderly and geriatric patient population and the care of these patients as appropriate to unit assigned. Maintains a direct line of communication with Unit Director regarding decision-making processes, patient and family status, and unit work flow. Demonstrates ability to make independent and appropriate judgments within legal scope of practice regarding patient care. Demonstrates knowledge of use of the nursing process. Able to demonstrate leadership skills by directing others, maintaining nursing unit process flow, and participation in committees or other documented activities. Exhibits professionalism at all times in dealing with all staff, ancillary departments, and facility’s internal and external customers. Able to read; write legibly; speak in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position (i.e. Microsoft Windows, Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, internet, timekeeping, e-mail); troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment (i.e. Intravenous (IV) pumps, Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitors, vital sign machines, bed and gurney operation, and the like). Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place and patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
