Position Summary :

The Emergency Room Social Worker provides psychosocial assessments, crisis intervention, and discharge planning services for patients and families in a fast-paced emergency department setting. This role focuses on identifying patient needs related to emotional, mental health, social, and environmental factors to support optimal outcomes and safe transitions of care.

Key Responsibilities :

Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments for patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED).

Provide crisis intervention, counseling, and emotional support to patients and families experiencing trauma, loss, abuse, substance use, or mental health crises.

Collaborate with the interdisciplinary ER team—including physicians, nurses, and case managers—to develop and implement patient-centered care plans.

Coordinate referrals to community resources, inpatient psychiatric facilities, shelters, substance use treatment programs, and other social service agencies.

Assist with discharge planning, ensuring continuity of care and safe transitions.

Evaluate patients for potential abuse, neglect, or safety risks and make mandatory reports as required by law.

Document all interventions, assessments, and referrals accurately and promptly in the electronic medical record (EMR).

Participate in interdisciplinary huddles and case reviews as needed.

Provide education and support to patients and families regarding coping strategies, available resources, and care options.

Maintain professional standards in accordance with NASW Code of Ethics and hospital policies.

Qualifications : Education :

Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program is required.

Licensure / Certification :

Current Alaska LMSW or LCSW required (pending AK license accepted).

Must maintain active licensure in good standing.

Experience :

Minimum 2 year of experience as a social worker required.

Acute care experience required; ER experience strongly preferred.

Experience with crisis intervention, behavioral health, or trauma-informed care preferred.
