Position Summary
The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for completing Initial work up of patients such as gathering and documenting chief complaint, ocular and systemic history, and past family and social history. Will perform initial patient assessments to determine the ophthalmic status of each patient. May scribe in electronic medical records format to document the patient visit and examination. Contributes to the team as necessary to ensure quality patient care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Escort all patients from the waiting room for data collection. Following testing, advise them as to who will see them next and regularly check on patients to ensure they are comfortable while they are waiting.
- Educate all new patients regarding office procedures. Inform patients of the purpose of all tests performed and how they will be affected during the tests.
- Obtain patient histories, perform prescription verification, and maintain records.
- Assist in testing patient vision. Test far and near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
- Intraocular pressure measurement with Tonometer.
- Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
- Preparing patients for imaging and physician exam.
- Prepping patients for ophthalmic procedures, including intraocular injections.
- Maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician. Communicate with reception and lead to facilitate proper patient flow.
- Comply with all HIPPA regulations in all interactions with patient information

Working Conditions
Work is performed inside a temperature-controlled surgical center with open floor plan. Working hours may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. The number of patients assigned per shift will vary. This job operates in a professional surgical center with a business casual dress code. This role will routinely use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.

The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift or move 40 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
