P osition : Director of Operations for Littleton United Methodist Church
Responsibility Overview :
The Director of Operations is responsible for the overall administration and logistical functions of the campus, providing leadership, direction, and management of core operational areas. This role oversees all financial, administrative, and facilities-related affairs to ensure smooth operations and effective support for ministry activities. The primary objective is to manage the "business of the church" effectively, thereby freeing the Senior Pastor and Ministry Staff to concentrate on preaching, teaching, and pastoral care.
Education / Certification :
A degree in Business Administration is preferred and / or equivalent church or business administration experience is preferred. Minimum of five years of experience in business administration with supervisory and budgetary responsibilities is required.
Skills :
Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written), and financial management skills are essential. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, database management systems, and other PC-based applications.
Leadership :
Must possess proven administrative, financial, supervisory, and organizational skills. Demonstrated capacity to lead and administrate is required. The individual should be a team player, capable of working collaboratively with church staff and laity. This position is a problem solver who works with integrity, diligence, confidentiality, and discretion.
Direct Report : Senior Pastor; Chair of Trustees (Volunteer leadership)
Overview of Tasks (non-inclusive) :
The Director of Operations is responsible for the high-level oversight of five primary areas of church function : 1) Finances, 2) Human Resources, 3) Facilities, 4) General Administration, and 5) Strategic Support.
Financial Oversight and Management (Excluding Day-to-Day Bookkeeping)
The responsibility in this area focuses on strategy, compliance, reporting, and managing outsourced services, rather than routine transactional duties.
- Oversight and Vendor Management : Provide oversight of all financial matters and fiscal oversight and management. Supervise the contract bookkeeping / payroll vendor to ensure appropriate recording, reporting, and review of all financial activity.
- Budgeting : Manage the budgeting process. Support all committees and ministry areas in the development of their respective annual budgets, and compile all component budgets into the annual operating budget. Direct responsibility for budgeting and management of all facilities, administrative, and general expenses.
- Reporting and Analysis : Review and provide variance analysis of monthly financial statements and related reporting to the Finance Committee. Monitor ongoing revenues and expenses. Meet with the outsourced bookkeeper weekly and serve as the principal staff contact to the Finance Committee.
- Compliance and Control : Develop and maintain adequate financial controls. Evaluate and recommend financial policies and oversee their implementation.
- Banking / Investments : Serve as the primary contact with the church’s financial institutions, working closely with committees to provide oversight of cash flow management, financial transactions, and operating fund investments. Work with the Finance Committee.
Note : While day-to-day processing is outsourced, the Director may still be required to prepare bi-monthly payroll and submit it to the bookkeeper for processing, and code A / P invoices and submit them to the bookkeeper for system input.
Human Resources (HR) and Personnel
Function as the Human Resources Manager, overseeing personnel administration and compliance.
Facilities Management, Risk, and Security
Oversee the physical assets of the church and ensure a safe and compliant environment.
General Administration
Provide organizational leadership for daily operations, systems, and communication infrastructure.
Strategic Support and Leadership
Direct Reports : Manages and coordinates both paid staff and volunteer teams
Hours / Salary
Full-time, regular office hours of 8 : 30 a.m. – 4 : 30 p.m. Monday through Friday
Some flexibility will be necessary based on timing of after-hours activities and the needs of staff.
Evening or weekend hours will be necessary to accommodate regular monthly or occasional meetings / activities.
Salary Range : $75,000 - $85,000 based on experience and education.
