Job Description
Chesapeake Central Fleet Management (CFM) is seeking an experienced and dedicated Fleet Maintenance Superintendent to oversee the operations of our automotive, heavy truck / equipment and small equipment shops. The selected candidate would oversee operations at two separate maintenance facilities.
This role involves supervising a team of 45, including supervisors, technicians, welders, and others. The superintendent is responsible for ensuring maximum fleet availability and preventing operational delays for customer departments. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader with a passion for maintaining a high standard of safety, efficiency, and technical expertise while ensuring compliance with City of Chesapeake and CFM policies. This position also plays a key role in fostering team cohesion, maintaining high morale, and promoting a positive and collaborative work environment that supports the department’s mission.

Duties include, but are not limited to :
- Supervise and manage daily fleet operations by coordinating with supervisors, departmental liaisons, and vendors to develop effective schedules, monitor progress, and maintain accurate tracking of significant activities.
- Oversee the interviewing and selection process for new hires, ensuring documentation is accurate and complete.
- Conduct employee performance evaluations to assess strengths, identify areas for improvement, and support their professional development.
- Collaborate with departmental liaisons to align fleet services with operational priorities, anticipate upcoming needs, and develop coordinated plans that prevent delays and improve service delivery.
- Analyze historical vehicle and equipment repair records to identify and isolate patterns of concern relative to service and care of vehicles.
- Manage training needs and coordinate staff development through in-house sessions, technical classes, and regular meetings to support ongoing improvement.
- Review preventive maintenance and inspection programs for accuracy, recommend updates as needed, and ensure vehicles and equipment are properly assigned within the fleet system.
- Perform administrative duties, including maintaining accurate records, assisting in budget preparation, monitoring expenditures, and compiling operational reports.
- Attend meetings, seminars, and industry conferences to stay current on fleet management trends and best practices. Incorporating new insights to enhance fleet operations and programs.
- Enforce safety policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with City of Chesapeake and CFM policies, as well as all environmental laws and regulations.
- Oversee new vehicle commissioning, coordinating closely with multiple vendors throughout the upfitting process.
- Evaluate costly repairs on aging vehicles and equipment and, provide recommendations to the Fleet Manager for replacement or disposal based on maintenance history, operational usage, and budget considerations.
- Coordinate with vendors to schedule and manage contracted maintenance and repairs, ensuring work is completed on time and meets contractual terms.
- Manage and approve employee timecards, leave requests, and overtime scheduling based on workload and operational needs.
- Oversee facility maintenance, ensuring a clean, safe, and organized working environment both inside and outside the shop.
- Assess daily, weekly, and monthly shop challenges, identify operational inefficiencies, and provide solutions to improve workflow, morale, and productivity.
- Oversee employee issues by addressing concerns, investigating incidents, and administering appropriate disciplinary actions in accordance with policy.
- Other duties as assigned.
$4,000 CDL Stipend.
This stipend will begin 90 days after you obtain your Class-A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A) and will be paid out weekly. The City provides CDL training at no cost to employees. The required 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training are completed on the clock – get paid to train! Vehicles for DMV road testing are also provided.

Required Qualifications VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT : Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in automotive mechanics, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT : In addition to satisfying the vocational / education standards, this class requires a minimum of four years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Requires a valid driver’s license or CDL and a driving record in compliance with .. Special skills or equipment certification may be required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and / or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties. Preferred Qualifications Candidate must obtain and maintain a valid Class-A Commercial Driver’s License (City provides on the clock training and testing).
Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite, with strong proficiency in Excel for building and interpreting reports and tracking data. The candidate should also be skilled in preparing clear and professional written communications, including emails, letters, and documents.
