WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR IN THIS ROLE

The R&D Scientist will be an experienced product developer and innovative team player. They lead research, laboratory, pilot, and production scale experiments to deliver innovation, renovation and troubleshooting projects. This role requires a consumer-first attitude and a high degree of collaboration within the R&D- and cross-functional team. These projects will be extremely visible as they represent commitment to our customers and become in large part what our reputation as a category leader is based on.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Formulates recipe, process instructions, and quality specifications for new product innovation, renovation, cost savings and troubleshooting projects. Tailors approach to match project brief and brand guardrails such as cost, desired claims, ingredient usage, or nutrition targets
  • Conduct benchtop, pilot plant, production trials, food safety challenge studies and sensory testing to evaluate product attributes and shelf life, produce prototypes, and effectively scale-up products. Ensures that products and processes have met quality, safety, and risk assessment requirements
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members, including Marketing, Operations, Regulatory, Quality and Procurement to commercialize CPG products. Participates in product costing, labeling and regulatory review, packaging / artwork development, timeline development, etc.
  • Manage ingredient and product specifications in digital recipe management system. Effectively maintained to communicate formula, alternative ingredient usage, process instructions, quality specifications, and change management tracking with the production facility
  • Compile & analyze (statistically, mathematically and / or graphically) test results. Prepare & communicate reports
  • Partners with Procurement to mitigate ingredient supply risk, maximize flexibility, and drive cost efficiencies. Identify potential new suppliers and execute ingredient reviews
  • Analyze competitive CPG products and consumer trends. Proactively vet new ingredients and emerging processing technology to feed breakthrough innovation pipeline

    • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  • B.S. degree in Food Science, Engineering or related technical field
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the food industry demonstrating the skills required for this position
  • Excellent communication skills and computer literacy
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

    • ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Knowledge of food science, chemistry, ingredient functionality, food and beverage processing and manufacturing, sensory evaluation and consumer research, and consumer insights
  • Demonstrated successful development and scale-up of food and beverage products. Experience taking fresh and minimally processed food & beverage products to market
  • Ability to complete project work successfully and on time. Can follow SOPs and gold standards to drive projects forward
  • Able to balance multiple project initiatives simultaneously and be flexible to changing directions. Able to effectively communicate project progress and emerging risk to R&D leadership and cross-functional team
  • High level of professionalism. Solid communication skills (both verbal and written), organizational and time management skills, detail oriented
  • Strong digital / IT skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and recipe management systems

    • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Master’s degree in Food Science or relevant field
  • Prior beverage product development experience, fruit and vegetable processing knowledge, produce- or agriculture operations, food manufacturing experience
  • Bilingual English and Spanish preferred

    • PHYSICAL DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS :

  • Must have the ability to examine differences in product quality and package design
  • Ability to taste products and work with dairy, soy, and tree nut allergens
  • Occasional standing, walking, sitting, handling products, climbing stairs. Occasional exposure to manufacturing environments for extended periods
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs
  • Ability to work in both hot and cold environments

    • HOURS & WORKDAYS :

  • 1st shift (8 : 00-5 : 00pm) when business requires, weekends and overtime will be mandatory
