Description

JOB TITLE : Painter

REPORTS TO : Paint Foreman

Summary of position : Assist in surface preparation, mixing of paint, application of coating, striping, and clean up. Position requires willingness to learn, and the ability to follow directions concerning painting in the marine industry. May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor for the completion of the job in a safe and timely manner.

Essential Job Requirements : Make certain surfaces are prepared for coating according to paint manufacturers' specifications; paint surfaces using approved methods, striping tanks in a productive and timely manner as well as mixing paint as directed; must work within OSHA requirements relative to the shipbuilding industry; must comply with company, federal, state, and local safety and environmental rules and regulations; accurately operate, clean, and maintain all assigned equipment; properly store equipment; dispose of empty paint and solvent cans appropriately; properly store and take appropriate precautions for paint and solvents as directed by supervisor; knowledgeable in checking wet film mil (WFT) thickness being applied; assist sprayers in pulling lines; must be able to correctly and promptly follow directions. May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor for the completion of the job in a safe and timely manner.

Required Education : None

Required Experience : Formal or informal on the job training and two years of experience in the application of coatings in the marine industry.

Required Skills : Ability to take direction required. Must be able to work cooperatively and productively with other employees and shipyard personnel.

Physical Requirements : Regularly required to walk; frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, or crawl at various heights and in confined spaces; occasionally required to sit; required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to feel, grip, or handle; regularly required to safely lift and / or move up to 50 pounds; required use of vision to see up close, distance, and peripherally, as well as depth perception and ability to adjust focus in low light conditions. May be required to wear a respirator to safely perform assigned tasks. Must be able to follow clean shaven policy.

Mental Requirements : Must be able to carry out simple directions in a safe, timely, and productive manner.

Working Conditions : Regularly exposed to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, dusty conditions, wet and / or humid conditions, hazardous machinery, confined spaces, precarious places, close proximity to other employees.

To avoid injury, personal protective equipment (PPE) required such as safety clothing, safety devices to protect personnel from bodily harm. Overtime or shift work involved most of the time. Travel often required.
