Director, International Accounting

Position Title : Director, International Accounting

Position Type : Regular Full-Time

Salary Range : $102,000 - $128,000 - $154,000

Position Summary :

The Director, International Accounting serves as a hands-on leader, supervising a team of two Senior International Accountants. The Director is accountable for all aspects of global program revenue recognition, cost recovery, billing, month-end close, reconciliations, and audit preparedness. In collaboration with the International Finance and General Accounting teams, the Director drives efficiency, strengthens internal controls, and promotes financial stewardship across the organization. Additionally, the Director may represent or act on behalf of the Senior Director as needed.

Responsibilities :

Revenue Recognition & Cost Recovery

  • Direct the entire global program revenue recognition process, ensuring financial integrity and compliance with GAAP, donor requirements, and audit readiness.
  • Monitor award milestones and deadlines, ensuring timely and accurate revenue recognition and indirect cost recovery.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to International Finance leads throughout the program life cycle, from kick-off to closeout, ensuring accurate revenue recognition and compliance with financial standards.

USG & Non-USG Billing

  • Manage the invoicing and drawdown processes for USG and non-USG awards, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, and effective issue resolution.
  • Provide guidance and leadership in managing accounts receivable, optimizing cash flow, and resolving outstanding balances.
  • Ensure proper billing for seconded staff and lead efforts to improve collections and minimize aged receivables.

    • Month-End Close

  • Lead month-end close processes, ensuring timely completion and adherence to internal controls.
  • Review and approve key accounting entries, including indirect cost recovery, revenue recognition, and international direct accounting adjustments providing technical accounting guidance as needed.
  • Manage and ensure the reconciliation of HQ-paid prepayments and partners' aging schedules, ensuring compliance and accuracy. Follow up on outstanding balances ensuring resolution on a timely basis.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, compliance, and risk mitigation during close cycles.

    • Reconciliation & Reporting

  • Manage monthly grant accounts receivable / accounts payable (AR / AP) and project fund balance reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and following up on corrective adjustments as needed.
  • Serve as an accounting advisor to the International Finance team members on complex reconciliations, offering technical guidance.

    • Audit & Compliance

  • Direct all audit preparation activities, ensuring HQ and country office teams deliver complete and accurate documentation.
  • Ensure quality control of the production of SEFA reports, AR / AP schedules, and other supporting documentation for external and internal audits.
  • Support organization-wide corrective action efforts in response to audit findings, driving implementation of best practices and risk controls.
  • Continuously evaluate and refine audit-related processes, embedding efficiency and accountability.

    • Leadership & Impact

  • Actively supervise, lead, and develop a team of two senior international accountants, including performance management and professional development.
  • Provide thought leadership on financial policy, systems, and process optimization across the organization.
  • Promote and foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and cross-functional collaboration between Accounting and International Finance teams.
  • Mentor and develop international finance leaders to build their organizational capacity in accounting principles.

    • Supervisory :

  • This position supervises two Senior International Accountants.

    • Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting and a minimum of 8 years of relevant and progressively responsible experience; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience must include direct oversight and management of team members.
  • Experience with U.S. and international accounting standards.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial and compliance issues to non-financially trained audiences.
  • Ability to produce informative reports and presentations.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Proficiency with general ledger applications (QuickBooks and MIP a plus), and other database enterprise systems required for supporting international operations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and the confidence to make independent decisions, while keeping the Senior Director informed of important matters.

    • Preferred Qualifications :

  • CPA / CMA / CACMA / CA preferred.
  • Proficiency in Spanish and / or French is a plus.

    • Physical and Mental Requirements :

    Working Conditions, Travel and Environment
