Position Summary
The Accounting Director is responsible for overseeing the museums accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy integrity and timeliness of all financial reporting. Working closely with the CFO this role manages the day-to-day accounting functions ensures compliance with GAAP and nonprofit reporting standards and supports strategic financial management to advance the museums mission.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger accounts payable accounts receivable payroll fixed assets and revenue recognition.
Prepare and review monthly quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (FASB).
Maintain and reconcile all balance sheet accounts and ensure timely closing of the monthly and year-end books.
Support preparation of the annual budget forecasts and variance analyses in collaboration with department heads and the CFO.
Coordinate the annual external audit including preparation of audit schedules and liaising with auditors.
Ensure compliance with all federal state and local reporting requirements including tax filings (Form 990 state charity registrations etc.).
Internal Controls & Process Improvement
Develop document and maintain effective internal control policies and procedures.
Review and enhance accounting systems and workflows for efficiency accuracy and transparency.
Ensure proper segregation of duties and internal safeguards for financial assets.
Team Leadership
Supervise accounting staff providing mentorship performance feedback and professional development.
Foster a collaborative and accountable team culture aligned with the museums values.
Oversee accurate and timely processing of transactions and support cross-departmental financial needs.
Compliance & Systems
Ensure compliance with grant and donor restrictions including monitoring and reporting on restricted funds.
Manage the museums financial systems and interfaces (e.g. accounting software payroll systems donor database).
Support implementation and optimization of technology solutions for accounting and reporting.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or related field required; CPA strongly preferred.
Minimum 810 years of progressive accounting experience including at least 3 years in a management role.
Nonprofit accounting experience required; museum or cultural institution experience a plus.
Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting (FASB standards).
Proficiency with accounting software (e.g. Blackbaud Financial Edge Sage Intacct or similar) and advanced Excel skills.
Exceptional analytical organizational and problem-solving skills.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.
